Een Vietnam roman die de wreedheid, zinloosheid en andere morele vragen niet uit de weg gaat, maar wat het boek echter uniek maakt is dat driekwart ervan over de reis naar Parijs gaat die Paul Berlin en de leden van zijn compagnie maken op zoek naar Cacciato, hun mede soldaat die midden de wapenfeiten zijn M16 laat liggen, de oorlog achter zich laat en besluit 8000 km naar Parijs te wandelen. De tocht in de voetsporen van Cacciato noopt Berlin en zijn compagniegenoten tot reflectie over wat ze in Vietnam te zoeken hebben, waarom iemand de wapens achterlaat en hoe de Vietnamezen later zelf op hun aanwezigheid zouden terugblikken. Berlin is een angstige soldaat en gaat daaromtrent continu in conflict met zichzelf, maar de trip naar Parijs ligt hem wonderwel en gaandeweg vervagen de grenzen tussen achtervolgen, profiteren van een mooie kans of zelf deserteren. O'Brien schrijft vlot en we waren danig onder de indruk van "The things they carried", waardoor we met plezier aan "Going after Cacciota" begonnen. Hoewel origineel van opzet, goed uitgewerkt en veelzeggend over het traumatische van een oorlogservaring, wist het boek ons toch niet echt bij de keel te grijpen. Graag gelezen, met enkele waardevolle passages: een boek over cognitieve dissonantie (zowat de enige term die we onthielden uit de lessen psychologie die we ooit kregen), over dromen, feiten of trauma's? Aan de lezer zelf om dat uit te maken. Bekroond met de National book award.
