Indrukwekkend, soms filosofisch oorlogsverslag
Oorlog
Na "The Things They Carried" & "Going after Cacciato" is dit het derde oorlogsrelaas van Tim O'Brien dat we lezen.
O'Brien vertelt vlot en open over zijn afkeer van de Vietnamoorlog en hoe hij absoluut geen dienst wil nemen. De druk van zijn omgeving is echter groot en - ondanks de plannen om naar Canada te vluchten - volgt Tim een opleiding in Fort Lewis, waarna hij naar Vietnam verscheept wordt.
If I die in a Combat Zon, is het relaas van een jaar lang diensttijd. Een verhaal van angst en onzekerheid, een verhaal van vriendschap en twijfels, waarin Tim O'Brien niets van het oorlogsleven romantiseert of opblaast. Zijn verhaal klinkt oprecht en feitelijk, maar neem veel ruimte voor de menselijke kant.
Soldaten aan het front zijn bang, zitten dikwijls in een ambigue situatie maar moeten gewoon continu verder. Soldaten aan het front sluiten vriendschappen, maar hebben evenzeer een jaar dienst met makkers waarvan ze de achternaam niet kennen. Soldaten aan het front hebben soms wel een mening of de oorlog goed of slecht is, maar dat verandert niets aan hun drang te overleven en deze oorlog te doorstaan.
En wat is moed? Wanneer is een soldaat moedig? Als hij absoluut geen rekening houdt met levensgevaar om iemand te redden en daarbij sneuvelt? Of net als hij weet wanneer hij geen risico moet nemen, zo overleeft en later nog een rol van betekenis kan spelen?
Tim O'Brien schrijft helder en relevant over Vietnam. If I Die in a Combat Zone is - omwille van de hier en daar wat meer filosofische uitweidingen - misschien wel zijn meest diepgravende verslag. Indrukwekkend.
