Een fijnzinnig en melancholisch pareltje waarin J.L. Carr in een schijnbaar eenvoudig verhaal en haast occasioneel de grote thema's van het leven laat passeren.
Tom Birkin keert getraumatiseerd terug uit de loopgraven van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Hij trekt naar het pittoreske en landelijke Oxgodby om er in de plaatselijke kerk een middeleeuwse muurschildering te onthullen die eeuwenlang onder pleister verstopt zat. Gedurende wat een eindeloze, hete zomer lijkt te zijn, krijgt hij stilaan weer grip op het leven en vertrouwen in de toekomst. Kleine ontmoetingen, oprechte vriendschap, het dorpse leven, verliefdheid, de zon en het landschap lijken Birkin de handvaten te reiken die hij nodig heeft.
J.L. Carr schrijft in piekfijne zinnen en laat het grote en passionele drama stilistisch achterwege. Dat maakt echter de aangeraakte thema's of de impact op zijn personages niet minder groot. Door Tom Birkin zijn verhaal zelf te laten vertellen wanneer hij op latere leeftijd terugblikt op die zomer, krijgen de gebeurtenissen een andere lading en lijkt de loomheid van de hete zomer een allegorie te zijn voor de gelatenheid waarmee iemand op latere leeftijd zijn lot draagt.
Ik bedenk bij mezelf dat ik wel de vertaling had moeten lezen: het was even geleden dat we in een Engelstalig boek af en toe onze grip dreigden te verliezen omdat we niet alle finesse uit de woordkeuzes en zinsbouw konden proeven. Een feit dat onder meer op de taalrijkdom van Carr's pen duidt.
A Month in the Country is een sfeervol, uitgepuurd en aangrijpend kleinood.
