Pittig en straf!
Rauw, intens, donker, uitermate sfeervol en meeslepend.
We zijn helemaal geen comic-lezers, maar het is sinds Preacher (eigenlijk de enige andere langere comic-reeks die we ooit lazen) geleden dat we onmiddellijk zo gegrepen en geboeid waren. De tekeningen zijn sfeervol en soms beklemmend en ondersteunen zo het verhaal.
Morpheus - God van de slaap - wordt door gewone sterveling Roderick Burgess in de val gelokt en een mensenleven lang gevangen gehouden. Eigenlijk wilde de selfmade magiër De Dood in de val lokken, maar dat mislukte. Wanneer Morpheus meer dan 70 jaar later aan zijn gevangenis ontsnapt, trekt hij de wereld - en het Godenrijk - in om weer orde op zaken te stellen.
De reeks is fantasierijk en sterk uitgewerkt: de combinatie tussen de krachten uit het Godenrijk en hun invloed op aarde is knap doordacht en doet ons toch vaak aan Preacher denken. Niet in het minst omdat ook in The Sandman het geweld behoorlijk plastisch is en er aan de mate van gruwelen die mensen (en/of Goden) elkaar kunnen aandoen geen einde lijkt te komen. Pittig en straf!
