Degelijk, maar niet de beste uit de reeks
De voorlaatste behoort volgens ons niet tot de betere boeken uit de Donkere Toren reeks, maar niettemin hebben we hem gretig verslonden. Als het paard de stal ruikt...
We herinneren ons een vlot begin; onze innige band met de personages na zoveel avonturen en vooral na het straffe 'Wolves of the Calla' zal daar zeker voor iets tussen gezeten hebben. Song of Susannah start in diezelfde sfeer, wordt relatief verrassend op gang getrokken en de verhaallijn van de scherpschutter en zijn posse heeft natuurlijk nog steeds voldoende spanningsboog om ons aan het boek gekluisterd te houden.
Helaas herinneren we ons ook een plotlijn waar we maar geen grip op kregen ook al kregen we er van de auteur behoorlijk wat uitleg over. We herinneren ons bovendien dat King naar metafictie grijpt, dat behoorlijk goed doet (al vonden we het wat voorspelbaar) maar dan uiteindelijk toch nog met een flinke verrassing voor de dag kwam.
Over de hele lijn blijft The Dark Tower een straffe reeks, met soms maffe, soms verrassende en dikwijls spannende plotlijnen die zelden voorspelbaar of voor de hand liggend zijn.
Dus zonder aarzelen op naar dat laatste deel. We zijn benieuwd hoe en of Stephen King de losse eindjes aan elkaar knoopt en hoe, of en wanneer Roland de Donkere Toren vindt.
