Snelle en spannende scifi thriller
Thriller
Blake Crouch is een vakman, en een goeie.
Zonder aarzeling sleept hij zijn lezers aan een razend tempo mee in zijn vlot geschreven, spannende en meeslepende sci-fi thrillers. Geef Crouch 20 bladzijden en hij heeft je verrast met snelle actie, fris uitgewerkte, wetenschappelijke ideeën en de impact daarvan op onze leefwereld en zijn hoofdpersonages.
Ook in Upgrade doet hij dat: de wetenschap is in staat met dierlijk en menselijk genoom te knutselen, maar sinds een wereldwijde hongersnood uitbrak omdat dat geknutsel blijkbaar toch niet helemaal onder controle te houden was, is de technologie verboden. Er zijn echter wetenschappers die geloven dat de enige manier om het einde van de mensheid tegen te houden (klimaatverandering, ... u kent het wel), de mens beter maken via geknutsel aan dat genoom. Een upgrade dus.
Die formule gebruikt Crouch om een spannende, snelle en coole thriller te schrijven, waarbij je als lezer doorheen de actie en spanning vliegt. Links en rechts kregen we wel het gevoel dat er net iets te veel wetenschappelijk verklarende ruimte werd gebruikt, wat af en toe de vaart afremde, maar het boek blijft zelfs dan bovengemiddeld goed.
Tot slot geeft Crouch nog een moraliserend slotpleidooi mee, maar dat vonden we best verteerbaar of zelfs begrijpelijk.
