Een asteroïde die onafwendbaar op de aarde afstormt zal een einde maken aan het leven zoals we dat kennen. Tegen die achtergrond schrijft Ben H. Winters de fascinerende The Last Policeman-trilogie. In deel 1 hadden we nog 6 maanden voor de inslag en maakten we kennis met kersvers politieagent Henry Palace: een fijne leeservaring, die niet naar deel 1 van een trilogie smaakte.
Nu we ook deel 2 achter de kiezen hebben, zijn we nog altijd fan: de premise werkt en geeft de boeken een fascinerende setting: we zijn nog 72 dagen voor inslag en zijn voormalige babysit vraagt Henry Palace om haar vermiste man te zoeken. Nu is dat niet uitzonderlijk: veel mensen geven de brui aan hun dagdagelijkse leven, kwamen om bij rellen, laten hun partner voor een jeugdlief in de steek of zijn gaan 'bucket-listen'. Toch bijt Henry zich vast in de zaak.
Opnieuw sleept Winters je mee naar een goed uitgewerkte plot waarin hij de persoonlijke dramatiek aan de maatschappelijke weet te koppelen, de spanningsboog flink uitwerkt en in heldere zinnen iets vertelt over hoe mensen zich staande houden in een wereld die op zijn einde loopt.
