IJzersterk geschreven en relevant
IJzersterk, zijn de verhalen van Ken Liu.
We waren al enthousiast over The Paper Menagerie en other stories, maar zijn na het lezen van The Hidden Girl helemaal wild van de kortverhalen van de in Amerika wonende Chinese auteur.
De 17 verhalen in dit boek zijn allemaal goed, zeer goed of zelfs uitmuntend. Ken Liu hanteert science fiction, cyberpunk, fantasy,... op een absoluut meesterlijke wijze om na te denken over wat het is dat ons mens maakt en of er ook andere manieren zijn om een toekomst voor de mensheid te zien.
In The Hidden Girls & other stories zijn een deel van de verhalen geïnterlinieerd: ze draaien op verschillende manieren rond de uitvinding van de digitale upload van het menselijk bewustzijn en wat dat met mens-zijn en de planeet doet. Het is sterk denkwerk verpakt in goed geschreven en meeslepende verhalen.
Het verhaal 'Byzantine Empathy' weet dan weer op indrukwekkende wijze blockchaintechnologie, ontwikkelingshulp, virtual reality en menselijkheid te verweven en liet een stevige impact na.
In de verhalen van Liu is ook altijd het spanningsveld tussen Oosterse en Westerse cultuur aanwezig en wordt je als lezer dikwijls (onderhuids of niet) geconfronteerd met ontheemden, vervreemding en zoektochten naar identiteit. Relevant, erg goed geschreven en zelden of nooit vrijblijvend: zo hebben we ons leesvoer graag.
