Roman met magisch-realistische elementen over Sigurd, een jonge monteur op een boorplatform voor de kust van Noorwegen. Na een traumatische ervaring tijdens zijn eerdere dienst bij de marine worstelt hij met schuld, isolement en het aangaan van contact met de bemanning. Wanneer hij een zeehond aanziet voor een drenkeling, ontmoet hij Reykr, een selkie met een aangeboren afwijking, die via zijn onderbewustzijn met hem communiceert. Na het overlijden van zijn grootmoeder op de Faeröer wordt Sigurd geconfronteerd met pijnlijke waarheden over zichzelf en met een onbekend familiegeheim.

Sigurd, a junior mechanic at an oil rig off the coast of Norway, struggles to come to terms with a traumatic event he experienced at his previous position in the Navy. Unable to resist the call of the sea, he works his new offshore job, but finds it hard to make meaningful connections among the crew.

One day, he mistakes a seal for a drowning man, and comes into contact with a strange creature: a selkie with a birth defect. This creature, Reykr, offers Sigurd the connection he’s been unable to find, and begins communicating with him through his subconscious, helping him face painful truths about himself and his role in the events that still haunt him.

When Sigurd’s beloved grandmother in the Faroes passes away, he fears he needs to leave Reykr behind, but what he doesn’t realise is that Reykr holds the key to uncovering a family secret Sigurd didn’t even know existed...
